Merchant Services

Want to suggest a book, music CD or other item for Anglican Marketplace, or offer other advice on how to make this site better? Let us hear from you!

We at the Prayer Book Society wanted the redesigned Anglican Marketplace to offer a wider selection of trustworthy works and resources for orthodox Anglicans to choose from. And indeed, between books and CDs offered directly by PBS, and those commended by the Society Board and offered through our Associate relationship with Amazon.com, the new Marketplace debuted in the summer of 2010 with four times the listings of its predecessor site.

Yet we know that this is just a start. We realize that much more is needed to round out the selection of works and resources commended on the new
Marketplace, and that we must constantly strive to enhance and update this service with fresh listings. And we know we can't do that all by ourselves; we need your help to make this the comprehensive resource that will truly serve your needs and those of other faithful Anglicans. To that end, the PBS Board will welcome and consider suggestions for additional offerings, or on how to improve this on-line ministry, from Marketplace visitors and patrons.

How to contact us about the Marketplace:

Please direct all suggestions or other comments or questions relating to Anglican Marketplace to prayerbooksoc@aol.com. If you wish to commend a book or music CD that is not currently listed on the Marketplace, please include its full identifying and locating information (e.g. in the case of a book, its full title and author name, and its ISBN number), and a brief description/review (a paragraph or two) of the volume or recording. All suggested books should be compatible with orthodox Anglicanism; books and CDs available from Amazon.com are preferred.

The Lambeth Conferences 1867-1998

Lambeth Palace is the London home of the Archbishop of Canterbury and it was there in 1867 that what became known as The Lambeth Conference of Anglican Bishops began, with 76 present. Later, when the numbers increased they met elsewhere, most recently at the campus of the University of Kent at Canterbury, a mile or so from the Cathedral. Here 900 or so assembled in 1998. (The 2008 Lambeth Conference departed fairly significantly from the pattern followed at previous Conferences, and may receive special treatment in a future offering from the Prayer Book Society.)

With some disruption due to wars, the Conferences have occurred every ten years. Though they are called "Conferences" they are more than a normal Conference but less than a Synod. That is, the Letter from the Conference to the Churches around the world, together with the Resolutions passed by those present, form a kind of consensus statement of where the leaders of the Churches are at any one time on matters of common concern. Thus they have – or should have – a form of moral authority for members of the Anglican Communion.

To read systematically through the Reports from committees, and the resolutions put forward by them, and then passed by all, provides one with a most enlightening insight into Anglican concerns decade by decade. There are some commitments which remain solid and others that are modified over the years; there are some positions that are espoused and then rejected; and there is evidence of changing views concerning liturgy, ecumenism, ethics and the work and persons involved in the Ministry.

What abides is a real sense of the importance of the fellowship and bonds of affection between the member churches; and the sense that while each one is autonomous all together are interdependent. And with this, the role of the Archbishop of Canterbury in inviting to the Conference and in presiding over it are clear from the first to the last.

Gods Secretaries: The Making of the King James Bible

Adam Nicolson

The story of the writing of the most influential Bible translation of all time, the classic Authorized (King James) Version. This volume is not definitive on the topic, but a fresh and engaging introduction to it. The KJV "is a foundation of the English-speaking world
more than even Shakespeare is," asserts one reviewer. "How this astonishing book came to be composed is Adam Nicolson's story in [this book]. It is a successful account of how diverse personalities, European history, and religious fashions produced a timeless classic."

The Bible in English: Its History and Influence

David Daniell/Yale University Press, 2003

The history of the Bible in English, rescued from the arid academic pieties of Biblical scholars.

William Tyndale: A Biography

By David Daniell/Yale University Press

The book that rescued Tyndale, the greatest of the earlier translators of the Bible into English, from ill-deserved neglect. Tyndale learned Greek and Hebrew to pursue his goal of translating the Bible into English, one fan noted on Amazon.com. "It is said that as [Tyndale] left England he told a cleric that if God spared him to do his work 'even a boy driving the plough shall know as much scripture as you.' Tyndale did not complete his work but his New Testament and his first five books of the Old Testament formed the basis of the King James Bible. His translation contains phrases of sublime beauty which have become part of the language." Though Tyndale was martyred for his efforts in 1536, English translations of scripture proliferated immediately thereafter; "the whole Bible, or significant parts, has now been translated into English from its original Greek and Hebrew more than 3,000 times," according to Yale University Press.

William Tyndale: If God Spare My Life

Brian Moynahan/Abacus

Tyndale, heroic father of the English Bible tradition, has had a much-deserved revival of interest. This is a highly readable biography. "Should be required reading for anyone interested in English history, Church history, or Bible translation," writes a reviewer on Amazon.com. "A great read, a wonderful introduction to Tyndale, and an inspiration to 'fight the good fight.'"
