Music: Sacred Music Recordings
The Anglican Choral Tradition
The liturgy of Anglicanism's Book of Common Prayer has fostered a distinctive and rich musical tradition which is both choral and congregational. The choral tradition was developed in the cathedrals and college chapels, in which the psalms, canticles, and anthems of Morning and Evening Prayer were sung daily by dedicated choirs. The congregational tradition belonged to the parish churches, and began with the metrical psalms of the Reformed tradition, whose tunes were taken up into the hymns written by the 18th and 19th century hymnographers, both Evangelical and Anglo-Catholic. A third strand has been the recovery and incorporation of the extraordinary polyphony of the late Middle Ages and Renaissance, as well as later developments, baroque, classical, and romantic, in the catholic tradition.
The magnificent Tudor chapel of King's College, Cambridge, has for 50 years or more been the pre-eminent shrine of the Anglican choral tradition, under directors Philip Ledger, David Willcocks, and currently Stephen Cleobury.
The Prayer Book Society (PBS) therefore commends the following brief selection of recordings by the King's College Choir, both as a worthy addition to your musical library and as a fitting beginning of the Marketplace's new music section. But much more follows after that! Keep browsing in this category to see offerings from the best known Canadian representative of the Anglican choral tradition, the choir of tiny St. John's Church, Elora (west of Toronto), and a number of other CDs chosen with the classical Anglican in mind, including recordings by The Sixteen and the Tallis Scholars.
